Archive

The Sarai Archive is part of the efforts to think through issues of research and documentation in an interpretative and distributive fashion. The Sarai Archive creates and electronically preserves records of media practices and urban life.

Our attempt is to create a range of interpretive domains around the range of media forms and practices that inhabit the contemporary. These interpretive strategies of archiving range from the worlds of everyday photography to advertising, cable operators and videowallas, computer and music grayware markets, youth sub cultures of programming and free software, the large world of print, the diverse film cultures of viewing, distribution and reproduction.

The urban collection in the archive will provide information about everyday forms of social practices. These refer, among others, to documents as well as texts, videos, photographs and sounds related to the city of Delhi, urban environment, labour, social movements, leisure and domesticity. In addition to curating existing material, we would also 'create' the 'record' of various practices through ethnographic notes, oral testimonies etc. Sarai invites all interested persons to suggest themes, sources, collections and ways of obtaining more information.
