Dear Friends,
First a review of what took place last month:

OCTOBER REVIEW

Comic Book Reading (26th October 2007)
5:00 pm
Reading on River of Stories
Speaker: Orijit Sen

On the 26th of October 2007, the first comic book reading took place at The Media Section of the French Information & Resource Center. The reader was Orijit Sen (River of Stories, 1994) arguably India’s first graphic novelist. Orijit Sen began the reading with a narration of "The River of Stories ". Copies of the work were given to the audience so as to enable an easier engagement with the reader’s comments. After going through the work, Orijit spoke briefly about a few other projects that he had done and wrapped up the reading with frames that he had copied from Tintin when he was a 12 year old. The reading was essentially Orijit talking about the evolution of his practice, what it was influenced by, and what it has culminated into.

A crowd of 76 people attended the reading, which was much more than what the organisers had initially expected. The underlying idea behind these comic book readings is to popularize discourse about comics by inviting comic book practitioners/readers/aficionados to talk about a work that has been instrumental in moulding their understanding of the form.

The readings provide the space for a much-needed critical look at comic books, and a common meeting ground for people who have a strong attachment with it.

Upcoming Events and an Announcement:

This month we continue with the comic book readings but with a change in the venue and speaker. There is going to be a film screening by Priya Sen, who is a researcher and media practitioner at Sarai and with the comic book mania going around, we bring you the call for entries for the Comix Workshop which begins in December.

Hope you will make yourself available for the events and access the particulars announced to you.

Best,

Film @ Sarai
About Elsewhere, 2007
Director: Priya Sen
Length: 29 minutes
23rd November, 4:30 pm
Seminar Room, CSDS

“About Elsewhere” is a film that seeks to foreground the impossibility of fixing notions of sexuality through ideas of "identity" and "language". As the film moves through various worlds the filmmaker has
inhabited, it suggests a self in constant formation; one that constructs itself from parts and places that are in themselves, fragments of memory and experience. The film uses the metaphor of a "shell" as a place of repose and withdrawal from which it is possible to emerge. Uniquely, and with all the flair and multiplicity that accompanies a way of being.

Priya Sen works primarily with nonfiction and experimental genres of video and film. She has worked as director of photography, editor, and taught film and video in Philadelphia and New Delhi. She currently works with Sarai-CSDS, Delhi as a researcher-practitioner of experimental media with the Cybermohalla project.
