Discovering Childhood

The child's home, community and the centre are not isolated entities but form an interactive unit. The saying – ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ underlines the crucial role the community plays in nurturing children. Ankur seeks to democratise the community space for children and bring adults into the dialogue. It is a platform to bring children, parents and facilitators face to face to exchange notes and share mutual concerns.

Learning Centres
an open space for children
Gradually evolved over time, these centers are locations to celebrate the spirit of wonder, curiosity, inquisitiveness, spontaneity and self-creation. A philosophy of caring, invitation and nurturing animates the way we imagine and constantly remake these spaces. These are spaces where children meet with other children, and together and individually create learning experiences.
Children’s Club
celebrating story telling
A child is not an empty container to be filled by the learned adult. A child creates and connects world pictures; she can also narrate these as stories and is always eager to narrate them. The children’s club strives to affirm their world, their life experiences – their stories. Children find an open floor to unload and unpack their imaginations, fears, restlessness, dilemmas and dreams. The club, a site away or between school and the home, gives children a space to value fun/play and freedom from the routines of school and home, give expression to their creative energy and help explore newer dimensions to their lives and learning.
Library
a community of active readers
To access other narratives, world of ideas and knowledge, beyond the textbooks, remains an latent ambition of a child. To speak to this latent desire of a child, it is imperative to open a world that makes new connections, associations and meaning. The library to us is conceived by us as a site that creates a community of active readers, writers and debaters. Our libraries are not always silent spaces. It is transformed into an active space for sharing knowledge, experiences and creative thinking, a space where minds evolves to examine, discern, appreciate and participate in the world of books and ways of thinking.
