:::::::'writing the city - electronic'::::::::::

'Writing the city' was an exercise in viewing / writing the city through the hypertextual lens, in the sense of formal construction of text/z/.com, + in approach to the [p]/[m]uddle of urban data itself, + in sense of reinscrip[ac]tion.

<<Theory. Should. Result. In. action. Cybernetic. Feedback. Loops. Should. Penetrate. Beyond. The. Walls. Of. Cyberspace. Hypertext. Social. Action.>>

Days 1:2 were taken up with theorectical discussions on the nature of hyptertext. + presentations of hypertextual experiments, from well known [conventional] pieces - olia lialina's my boyfriend came back form the war - to more conceptually orientated pieces concerning the idea of data as text - florian cramers permutations, harwood/Scotoma's waste words - alongside the more recent idea of codework emerging in net.art culture.

Much emerged from these discussions.

[h]text as a neato apotheosis of 'contemporary literary theory' from Foucalts death of the author, to Kristeva's intertextuality to Derrida's Grammatology. Gram=link, use of technology as emphasising semantic connections.

[h]text as a mode of text as involved with process of production as with final outcome. ,,,this is where it gets exciting,, Codework, textware.art such as this extract from a recent posting from jodi.org Excuse cross posting.

[h]text as war machine, no, as mutant machine, [h]text as virus, rather than revolution[=alternative system]. [h]text as virus. conceptually implies some kind of system // trajectory predicated on an existing one that uses the tools available to/ born of that system, to subvert the system.

All the talk of //virus[revo]solution// prepared us and our newly converted viral terroists for a derive of the city.

our panel went out into the city armed with hypertextual weaponry / and carved their own autonomous trajectories through the mad crowd. The clicked , they shot, they recorded, they assembled.
