Tech Manual
Installing Gentoo

A record of a conversational and hands-down experience for installing OS Gentoo. The 15-page manual goes over the basics of what is Gentoo, partitioning, kernel, networking, installing softwares like GIMP and OpenOffice, etc. An extract:

"KERNEL: Kernel knows all kinds of languages. For instance, that of the mouse, the keyboard, hard idsk, etc. All these have their own languages. The kernel understands all of them. For example, when we press A on the keyboard, how can the monitor know what has happened? The kernel tells the monitor, "Hello mister, 'A' has been pressed. Come on, show it on the screen!" If we save something on the hard disk, it is the kernel which talks to the hard disk, and only then does the work reach the hard disk. This is very important."

This arrow flitted around with the movement of my hand. It was my first time...

Technology, Time and Roles

Many people in the localities, in which our labs are, have cameras and portable sound recording equipment. But there is a generally pervasive interference from different people when these are used. When my colleagues – young men and women – and I step out into the locality with our cameras, this interference comes in the form of a number of questions by onlookers, residents and passers-by.
