Recording Conversations
Over the years, the labs have created a rich archive of recorded conversations in the locality. The conversations have been about the making of the locality, about the experience of the city, about work, incidents, anecdotes, and more. They are constantly worked with, and also catalogued and logged.
Raja interviews Baare dhol wala
September 2007
Raja, at the Dakshinpuri Lab, is a self-professed lover of music. He writes, "My love for music began with listening to my father's younger brother playing the drum. I would carefully listen to him playing, then practice on his drum whenever he'd be away from the house. If I found the beat of any song difficult to remember, I'd attend jaagrarans (night long prayer meetings where music is played) in the neighbourhood and then practice the beat in the morning. Utensils, buckets, drums, iron railings - there is nothing which is not a musical instrument for me!"
Mr. Jayaweer is known in Dakshinpuri as Baare dhol wala, Baare the drum player. He has started a group that performs at different ceremonies across the city. His musical career began when he played a tin drum in the street during the festival Holi. In this recording, Raja talks to him about what drives him to create music, when he practices, how he learned, how he makes music, when he enjoys playing the drum the most, and asks him to play something he has created. The recording has been mixed by Raja with his own beats, and edited into this 18 minute track.

The Zoo
May 2003
A conversation between two young women, Azra Tabassum and Mehrunisa of the JP Lab, at the Delhi zoo. This is a six minute socratic dialogue about teasing. Extracted from a longer recording, this sound and text work was also in the CD that is part of the Book Box (Cybermohalla publication, 2004). Called "The Zoo", it has been edited at the Sarai Media Lab by Parvati Sharma.
