Wall Writing

Walls in the city silently tell stories. They witness stories. They crave to be part of stories. They wait to be inscribed with stories. Wall writing is an exploration, experimentation, conversation, inscription and circulation that has an imprint and a transformative presence in the localities.

Wall writing is an exploration, experimentation, conversation, inscription and circulation that has an imprint and a transformative presence in the localities. The process can be delineated as follows:

1. Existing walls – A wall is selected. Detailed image and text logs of the life around the wall are made. These logs help uncover the passage of time, shifting activities and social dynamics around these walls and also tell histories of the making and unmaking of these walls.

2. Imagined walls – The image and text logs become the base material to “reimagine” these walls. How to tell a story about these walls and how to innovate fresh contexts of invitations around them? Text, colouration, structures of writing, scale of images, texture around each of these walls is imagined.

3. Painted walls – Print outs of the digital imaginations are taken. Through a collaboration with a local painter, the new image-text constellations are inscribed on the “existing walls”. This transformation of the wall is accompanied by conversations with residents, passers-by, by-standers, and the curious outsider.

4. Talking walls – In this way, each "painted wall" becomes a context for sharing stories, curiosities, idiosyncracies and questions. These materials, in the form of photographs, texts and sounds, are uploaded onto a blog.

Through this circulation, we hope to create over a duration, a theatre of images and texts in the lives of all the people who touch these walls and pass by them.
