Publications

The very diverse texts that Sarai has published, in equally diverse forms, over the last nine years, are unified in that they can be read as contributing to a public culture. The chaotic and often contradictory forms of contemporary society – an architecture of hybrid environments - demands investigation and amplification by creative and borderless imaginations.

This imagination invigorates not only the texts but also the forms and strategies of publication. Sarai’s books are all copyleft publications, and are also available for free download on the site. Their design allows for the seamless interweaving of interdisciplinary formats – blurring, for example, the conceptual distinction between the kinds of arguments text and image can make. Moreover, the use of low-cost technologies for the production of broadsheets allows for a more immediate dissemination of information and analysis.

Publications include - besides the Sarai Readers and the Deewan-E-Sarai - selections of the writings from the Cybermohalla project labs (in the form of books and wall magazines), the quaterly broadsheet Sarai.txt, the annual Hindi publication on media and the city from the "Publics and Practices in the History of the Present" project: Medianagar, occasional publications which arise from conference proceedings or other research contexts such as the "Public Record" of the Contested Commons conference and the FLOSS booklet, fliers, compilations and CDs.
