Like Shanghai, Jakarta, Beirut and São Paulo, cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are redefining what it means to be urban in the twenty-first century. The material fabric and everyday life of our cities are undergoing radical transformations, bringing with them new vectors of inequality and conflict, just as they open out new possibilities. Research on 'Emerging Urbanism' at Sarai will focus on this rapid transformation of the urban landscape.

The Information and Society Research Project at Sarai inaugurates a body of research, reflection and investigation on the different ways in which practices of information gathering, management and circulation impact on society in South Asia. Here, information is seen in its broadest sense as forms of knowledge and knowing as they play out in interaction with social and political processes, within realms defined by state as well as non-state actors.
