Production Centre #02; Rakesh Kumar Singh

After roaming randomly in Angooribagh, this place seems much better to me. It is giving me some relief from the heat outside. sohan is busy in making channel plates for TVs. Two of his associates are on leave since monday, therefore he hardly has time for some rest. And the biggest burden for him is that he has to make 20 sets of 'Blue bird' TV by 3pm, and it is already 1.30 am. Hence he will have to miss his lunch today. Anyway he is happy with this situation, because for him "aisa din kabhi-kabhi aata hai" "Pichle kuch dinon se kaam thik nahin chal raha tha, isliye chaha bhi ghar chale gaye, lekin unke jate hi kaam aa gaya." (days like these come very rarely, Work was not going very well for some days now, that's why some of them even left for home. But work came, the day they left). Actually channel plate is part of a TV set, which consists of some knobs like sound, brightness etc. It is a compilation of a choke (similar like the tube-light one) with 2-3 points for connecting cables of different knobs. I expressed my desire to know that how and from where the chokes come.He said "asal me humare yahan yeh saman Sultanpuri (this is situated in west Delhi) se aata hai. Kabari wale ke yahan se purana choke lekar uski marammat ki jati hai aur phir uske baad us par polish kiya jata hai." One piece of choke costs him Rs. 28/-. "Yadi yahi naya lena ho to 80-90 rupaya me milega." (we get this material from Sultanpuri - situated in West Delhi. Choke etc is taken from rag pickers, they are then repaired and then polished. one peice cost around 28/-.If you will go to buy it from the market, it'll not cost less than Rs 80-90/-

The shopkeeper comes to the workshop, "suno Blue-bird 10 piece hi banana aur baki das piece Dimond ka banana. Sala Itawa ka vyapari hai, kahta hai donon chahiye." (listen, make 10 pieces of 'Blue Bird' and other ten of 'Diamond' The businessman is from Itawa, and says that he wants both the brands)

Now he directs his associate (I forgot his name) to prepare things according to the latest order. His work is continuing along with our conversation. Now it is my chance to ask, "aapne kaha tha Angooribagh ke factories ke bare me, kya hua? Main pichle friday se aapse contact karna chah raha hun lekin aapka mobile hamesha engaged hi rahta hai " "Aare nahin sir, chachaji ghar gaye na to bhul se phone bhi unke saath hi chala gaya. Chinta mat kijiye kal shaam tak aa jayega phone." (You had told me about the factories of Angooribagh, what happened? I have been trying to get in touch with you since last friday, but the phone sems to be enagged all the time. Oh no sir, actually m uncle took my phone by some mistake. I'll get the phone by tomorrow.)

Finally, unavialabity of his phone emerge as the main hurdle between the small manufacturer and me. Anyway, let me continue with the things, which are happening here. Well, Sohan is binding channel plates which goes to the guy who is on his right side. He further go ahead with other works like fixing the channel plates and main into the cabinet. Now the set goes in the third hand, which adds the plug in the set. After being through different hands the set comes into Sohan's hand for final check. He check the sets through a cable connection, adjusts the picture through picture tube. In fact this is the final stage before covering the sets. So, it takes time in adjusting various things. Finally he orders to cover the sets by certain 'brand'. Actually he already had covers with lables of certain brands, like 'Blue bird', 'Diamonds',' Sony' etc. Now it is the time of delivery of TVs to a particular shop. Here comes Chhotu. He carries TV on his shoulder and delivers to the shop. And for every piece he delivers, he gets the recieving (signature) of shopkeeper and Sohan on the same piece of paper for the financial dealing.

He once again makes a promise to help me into getting in touch with some manufacturers. Although he is ready to give me phone numbers of some manufacuturer, which I am not interested in. "Mujhe aap khud direct milwa dijiye unse kisi din" is my response. (Just get me introduced directly) Because I do not find it worthy to meet some one through phone first.

Before coming to Sohan's workshop I was in Angooribagh almost for an hour. Actually, last week two labourers were murdered there for some reason. Therefore making enquiry about production units did not seem like a good option to me. The recent incident is related to thier internal rivalary, which has some connection with local space and thier work. And fortunately both were form Bihar.
