Delhi: A Select Bibliography

As a part of it's commitment to encouraging research on the contemporary city, and to making such research public, Sarai has undertaken many initiatives in the recent past. These include the City One Conference and the setting up of a digital archive of online resources that may be used by scholars, practitioners and students alike.

A smaller initiative is the ongoing collation of bibliographic sources, of which we are presenting a selection as Delhi: A Select Bibliography. Through it we hope to provide an introduction to primary and secondary sources on contemporary Delhi, to the authors and organizations who have written about the city, and to the diversity of material that is available for research in the public domain.

The experience of Sarai's own research projects has shown that a compilation of research sources for Delhi is important as discerning the history of the city, especially in the post-independence period, is often difficult, given the fragmented nature of writing on it. Such an understanding is especially crucial as Delhi, like other South Asian metropolises, undergoes widespread transformation and a newer generation of scholars grapples with its' complexities.

The bibliography is divided into nine parts, each covering a different aspect of city life. The sources included are in English and include government documents and academic writings. As this effort to compile a bibliographic database continues, we hope to expand the bibliography's parameters, to include materials written in other languages, on other subjects, such as art and literature, and from the popular press that are not included in this edition.

Most of all, we hope to make this a collaborative effort, which it has already been for those working at Sarai with materials coming from its' different projects. We invite you to add to this growing compilation, as we will through our own ongoing research.

To do this, at present please send an email to cityone@sarai.net. In the future, we plan to put this bibliography online and develop a structure for online collaboration.
